Eco Church Tips
WALK AROUND THE CHURCH GARDEN IN THE AUTUMN At this time of the year, ivy is a major source of nectar for insects. It flowers until late October and for a number of species, particularly those which become dormant over winter (e.g. Peacock, Comma & Small Tortoiseshell butterflies), the energy in this nectar is vital in allowing them to survive through the colder months. Ivy bees time their emergence to coincide with this abundant source of food. Look at the ivy covering the fence behind the Bible Garden and count the number of insects on the flowers.
ECO CHURCH TIPS FOR THE AUTUMN Instead of bagging up fallen leaves in plastic sacks, sweep them into your garden beds. They act as a natural mulch, protecting plant roots from frost and providing vital winter habitats for bugs and hedgehogs.
Don’t be too hasty tidying your garden or outdoor spaces: plants left to go to seed provide welcome food for birds and shelter for insect life
