Belonging & Believing

Baptisms

What does it mean?

It is wonderful that you are considering having your child baptised!

Holy Baptism is the calling of all sorts of people of all sorts of ages to belong to the family of all families (also called the Church). We baptise people in holy water in the traditional name of God: Father (Creator), Son (Redeemer) and Holy Spirit (Sustainer).

Baptism is a very important step on the Christian path and needs careful consideration. Before doing so, parents of infants should give serious thought to the promises they will be making, together with the godparents (or sponsors) on behalf of their child.

Baptism is more than a celebration of the beginning of life. It expresses the identity that is ours in Jesus Christ and the shape of the life to which we are called. Read more …

What's my commitment?

A baptism 1
Bearing this in mind parents and godparents are asked the following two questions at the beginning of the service:
"Today we are trusting God for the growth of these children in faith. Will you pray for them, draw them by your example into the community of faith and walk with them in the way of Christ?"
"In baptism these children begin their journey in faith. You speak for them today. Will you care for them and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ's church?"

A baptism 2
To both questions the parents and godparents reply:
"With the help of God we will"
(Extract from The Common Worship Service Book 1998)

These are serious promises which you will be making and if you feel it is unlikely you will be able to fulfil them, do please consider a service of thanksgiving - which we can also give - for your child. We will be happy to talk to you about this and answer any questions.

What do I do next?

Please download and print the following:

Baptism Application Form.

and bring it with you to any of the church services. This will confirm the booking. There are no fees for baptisms but you can make a "thank-you" offering if you would like to.

If you are considering giving us a donation as a thank offering for your child's baptism, then thank you very much! We will use your donation to invest in the mission of the Church in this area, so that others may also come and be baptized in the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and join the family of families too. Please use a gift aid envelope (situated in the church) if you are a UK tax payer.
